Has Snapchat just given businesses and bloggers the best reason to keep using (or start using) Snapchat?
Snapchat has struggled in 2017. With a poorer than expected IPO and a barrage of copycat features on Facebook and Instagram, they’ve been forced to do something amazing. And. They. Nailed it. You ready for it?
You can now add links to Snaps. Yep, you read that right. Snapchat sent out an update on Wednesday (5th July 2017) that allows you to add a link to any snap you send out. This will be a welcome addition to those businesses and bloggers who have been using Snapchat. Up until now there was no way to directly link to anything outside of Snapchat. People relied on their audience being proactive and visiting a website by typing in a URL or doing some other call to action.
Note: I’m using Snapchat on iPhone, so things might be slightly different if you’re using an Android device.
How to add a link to Snapchat
First off, make sure you’ve updated your Snapchat app. It should be at least version 10.12.0.0. After updating, I had to wait a couple of hours to get the feature, but it may work faster now that it’s been out a little longer.
Take a picture of something you want to share like a picture of a product you’re promoting or the featured image of your blog post. Down the right-hand side, you’ll see all your usual buttons like your text and drawing button. Now, however, just about the timer, there’s a paper clip. Go ahead and tap it.
Just type in the URL you want your audience to go to and click ‘Go’. If you’ve got a link saved to your clipboard (if you’ve copied a link) then it will show up and you can insert that link. Snapchat will take you to that website inside the app. Once it has loaded, hit ‘insert link’. And you’re done.
Now add some text telling your audience the action you want them to take. For your audience to open the link they need to swipe up on your snap (how they would normally reply). So whilst this feature is still very new, I’d recommend telling your audience to swipe up to follow the link. You could also use the drawing tool to draw some arrows. Get creative.
What can you use it for?
This is a great feature for businesses and bloggers because up until now, there has been no way to take your audience away from Snapchat to make an action, like buy a product or read a blog. Here are some of the things you can use the links for.
- Driving traffic to a competition on your website
- Asking your followers to follow you on other social media
- Send them to a YouTube video
- Send them to a product page
- Send them to an affiliate link
Still don’t think Snapchat is doing enough to keep you there? There are still a few features I’d like Snapchat to bring out to make using it easier. One of the big problems Snapchat still faces is that it’s difficult for people to grow a large audience natively in the app. Hopefully, that will be the next thing they address.
